What It Means When A Quiet Man Remembers Everything You Say

Your coffee order, three weeks later

You ordered an oat flat white once, on the way out of a meeting, and apologised for being complicated. Three weeks later a paper cup lands on your desk with the right lid and no commentary. He is already back in his chair.

He did not mention it, which is how you know it was not a trick. A man doing a trick waits for the reaction. This one just went back to his spreadsheet and let the coffee do the talking.

The week you said you were dreading

You said it casually, over bread: the audit starts Monday and you are not sleeping. He nodded and moved on to something about the wine. Sunday evening a short message arrives. ‘Good luck tomorrow. Eat something first.’

No speech, no pep talk. Remembering the date of your bad week is a bigger gesture than flowers, and he knows it, which is why it comes in eight words.

A story you told once, to someone else

At a party in March you told a stranger about the summer you drove across Portugal with a broken air conditioner. He was by the cheese, apparently listening to somebody else. In August he says, ‘Is that the car with the cough?’ and you stand there holding your glass.

Some people nod politely while waiting for their turn. He had been collecting. Whatever he does with the information later, it is worth asking when anyone last caught a story that was not aimed at them.

The thing you cannot eat

He ordered for the table at a place with a menu in two languages. Everything on the plate was safe. The only person who had mentioned the shellfish to the waiter was him, quietly, before the bread came.

You told him once, in a car, during a conversation about something else. Safety is rarely romantic, and then suddenly it is the only thing on the table that is.
