His voice drops the moment other men crowd in

A friend of yours ambles over at the party and starts doing the bit. Big laugh, a hand on your arm. The serious man across the room does not budge. He keeps talking to the host, jaw a touch tighter, eyes tracking the glass in your hand.
Do not brace for a scene. What you get is a lower voice, a slower smile and a very civil ‘we should get going’ twenty minutes later. He checks that you are comfortable and leaves the call to you. If he ever starts assigning who you may talk to, that is a different article.
He stops mid-sentence the moment you speak

He is unspooling something about his brother’s boat to six people, and you say ‘wait, what?’ from the far end of the table. He halts. Mid-sentence, mid-gesture. The table holds still with him.
Nobody on the guest list could have said it aloud, but they all caught it. He finishes the boat story later, straight to you. Most men command a room. This one hands it over unprompted, and it lands oddly like being chosen.
The way he holds himself shifts

Watch him cross a room twice, once before you arrive and once after. The first time he leans on things. The second time his shoulders set, his hands come out of his pockets and he stands like a man waiting on an answer.
No theatrics. He just stops looking relaxed and starts looking ready. Your sister, three drinks deep, mutters ‘okay, he’s decided’, and she may well be right. If you want to be sure, step out of the room and see whose eyes follow you.
